Screen Time Off
About

A field guide to spending less of your life on a screen.

Screen Time Off is an independent publication. It exists to answer one practical question: what actually helps a person put the phone down, and what only sounds like it does.

What this site is

Most advice about screen time is written as a moral argument: phones are bad, you are weak, try harder. That framing fails for the same reason diets fail — it demands willpower at exactly the moment willpower is lowest.

This site takes the opposite approach. Change the room, not the resolve. A clock you have to wind, a throw heavy enough to keep you in the chair, a camera with thirty-six exposures — these are not moral objects, they are physical ones. They make the offline option slightly easier than the online one, and that is usually enough.

Every guide here is built around that idea: the winter list, the gift guide, the quiz on the home page. Nothing on this site requires an app, an account, or a notification.

The three tests

Any product we recommend has to pass three criteria, and each one eliminates a large share of what is currently trending:

  • It works without a screen by design. Not "it has an app that is optional" — the object has to function fully when nothing is paired to it.
  • It survives past the honeymoon week. Things that are fun for four days and then live in a cupboard do not count, however good the photograph.
  • It is available from more than one seller. Single-supplier viral items disappear, and take every recommendation built around them with them.

Those tests are printed on the guide pages themselves, so you can hold us to them.

What we do and do not claim

We do not claim to have personally tested every item on this site. What we do claim is narrower and more checkable: every pick was judged against criteria stated on the page, and when a pick stops meeting those criteria, we remove it. Where we have used something for months, the page says so.

When we get something wrong, the correction is made on the page rather than quietly deleted. If you spot a factual error — a price band that has moved, a product that no longer exists, a claim that does not hold — write to us and we will check it.

How the site is funded

Screen Time Off is funded by affiliate commissions. When you click a "Check price" link and buy something, the retailer pays us a small percentage. The price you pay is identical either way, and no brand has ever paid for placement on this site.

Our retail partners are Amazon and Etsy. Amazon links carry our associates tag; Etsy links are tracked through the Awin network. Both are disclosed at the foot of every page that contains them, as required by the US Federal Trade Commission's endorsement guidelines.

What we will not do for money: sell placement, accept payment for a mention, publish a "review" of something we have no basis to judge, or recommend an object that fails the three tests above. If a partner ever asks for any of that, the partnership ends, not the rule.

Privacy, briefly

This site sets no advertising cookies and runs no third-party trackers. Traffic is measured with Cloudflare Web Analytics, which is cookieless and aggregate. The full detail is on the privacy page.
